EON: BORN OF LIGHT

 

DESCRIPTION

Eon - Born of Light is a 2D Underwater game focused on combat and exploration. Players take up the role of Eon, a sea monster who learns more about himself throughout his journey in the sea, exploring hidden areas, and fighting against a vast enemy.

ROLE
Level Designer I Environment Artist

  • Collaborated with 4 other game designers

  • Prototyping and building of levels

  • Integrating game assets and animated events into the level

  • Designing and balancing mechanics

  • Created all environment art assets and animations

September 2017 - April 2018

DESIGN PROCESS

Prototyping the game's level design on paper and on white boards. The final level is only built in Unity 3D after multiple iterations.

CHALLENGES

As the level designer, some of the challenges that I encountered while designing the levels included:
 

  • Ensuring that the player feels engaged despite not being able to jump.

  • Working around a different way of platforming due to the underwater setting.

  • Making sure that all levels are capped so that the player cannot swim out of it.

  • Exploring verticality to expand levels and to make the level more engaging.

  • Making sure that the width and height of each enclosed area is not too .claustrophobic - has enough breathing space for the player.

  • Making sure that interactables and enemies stand out from the environment

  • Making the environment feel alive.

  • Pacing the levels in terms of location and amount of obstacles and enemies the player encounters.
